Restaurante Casa Eusebio

A fixture on Calle Pérez Galdós for decades, Casa Eusebio is the kind of honest, family-run restaurant that defines regional Castilian-Manchego cooking: generous portions, locally sourced ingredients and recipes that have not changed because they do not need to. The ajo mataero (a rich garlic and pork offal stew eaten after the November pig slaughter) is reason enough to visit in autumn.

What to order

Start with migas hellinas — fried breadcrumbs tossed with chorizo, bacon and grapes, a dish that sounds humble but arrives at the table fragrant and deeply satisfying. Follow with morteruelo, a dense, spiced pâté of game meat and liver that is hyper-local to this corner of Castilla-La Mancha.

For mains, the roast lamb (cordero asado) is slow-cooked until the meat falls from the bone, and the locally caught crayfish from the Segura river occasionally appear as a seasonal special. Pair everything with a bottle from the DO Almansa wine region, whose robust Monastrell reds are produced just 40 km away.

Atmosphere and booking

The dining room is unfussy — tiled walls, checked tablecloths, framed photos of the Tamborada — but the welcome is warm and unhurried. The menú del día (weekday lunch) runs to around €12–14 for three courses with wine, representing extraordinary value.

Reservations are strongly recommended on festival weekends and in August when the town fills with returning locals. On quiet weekdays you can usually walk in for the 14:00 lunch service without a problem.
