Barrio de las Cuevas (Cave Quarter)

Carved into the soft tufa hillside on the northern edge of Hellín, the Barrio de las Cuevas is a neighbourhood of whitewashed cave dwellings that have been home to local families for centuries — and where a handful of residents still live today. It is one of the most unusual and photogenic urban corners in the province, yet almost unknown outside the region.

A living piece of history

Unlike the sanitised cave-house museums of Guadix in Granada, Hellín's cave quarter is a working neighbourhood. Doorways are hung with bead curtains, potted geraniums crowd the entrances, and neighbours chat across the narrow lanes in the shade of the afternoon. The caves maintain a natural temperature of around 18 °C year-round, making them genuinely practical homes in a region of scorching summers.

The oldest caves date to the 16th century, when the town's poorest residents excavated their homes from the hillside. Over generations, many were expanded with plastered facades, tiled floors and even upper storeys cut deeper into the rock, blurring the line between cave and conventional house.

Exploring the quarter

The best approach is on foot from the old town centre — follow Calle Corredera north until the streets begin to climb and the facades give way to carved tufa. The quarter is compact enough to explore in 30–40 minutes, but linger: the textures, colours and unexpected garden terraces cut into the rock make it a photographer's dream.

There is no formal visitor centre, but the Hellín tourism office occasionally arranges guided walking tours that include an interior visit to a restored cave home. Check their schedule at the Oficina de Turismo on Plaza de la Constitución.
