The ruined castle crowning Hellín's old hill offers the kind of sweeping, 360-degree view over the Segura river basin and the surrounding sierras that makes you understand immediately why every civilisation from the Iberians to the Moors chose this exact spot. Climbing the Old Quarter
The ascent to the Cerro del Castillo winds through Hellín's oldest neighbourhood, past whitewashed houses with terracotta pots and the 16th-century Iglesia de la Asunción — a late-Gothic church whose tower you'll use as a landmark on the way up. The walk from the Plaza de la Constitución takes about 15 minutes on foot via the Calle del Castillo staircase.
At the summit, the remains of the medieval Arab alcázar are modest but atmospheric — crumbling walls of reddish stone draped in wild capers in spring. What you really come for is the unobstructed panorama: the reservoir of Embalse del Camarillas glittering to the south, the Sierra de Segura ridgeline to the east, and the flat agricultural plain stretching west towards La Mancha.
Best Times and Practical Notes
Dawn is magical here — the town is silent, the light is pink, and you'll likely have the hill to yourself. Sunset is the local favourite, and on summer evenings you'll find families and couples spread out on the old walls with cold drinks.
The castle ruins are unfenced and freely accessible at all hours. There is no visitor centre at the top, so download an offline map before you go — the upper lanes of the old quarter are not always well signed.
