Embalse del Camarillas & Río Mundo Gorge
Just south of Hellín, the Embalse del Camarillas reservoir sits in a dramatic gorge carved by the Río Mundo, its water an improbable shade of turquoise against the ochre limestone cliffs. It's the kind of landscape that makes Castilla-La Mancha feel like a secret the rest of Europe hasn't found yet.
The Reservoir and Its Cliffs
The Camarillas dam, completed in 1960, backs up the Río Mundo into a long, sinuous lake hemmed in by vertical walls of Cretaceous limestone. The contrast of the blue-green water, the bone-white rock and the dark pine scrub above is genuinely photogenic at any time of year.
A paved mirador (viewpoint) on the MU-503 road — about 12 km south of Hellín — gives the classic overhead shot of the reservoir snaking through the gorge. In spring, the cliff ledges bloom with yellow gorse and pink rockrose, adding another layer of colour.
Walking and Water Activities
A marked hiking trail descends from the mirador to the reservoir's edge, where a small beach area is used by locals for swimming in summer. The water is clean and cold even in August — a genuine relief after the plains heat.
Kayak and paddleboard rental is available seasonally from a small outfitter based at the reservoir's southern bank (signposted from the MU-503). The gorge's upper section, accessible only by water, reveals overhanging cliffs and nesting griffon vultures that you simply cannot see from the road.
