Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Lucretili
Wrapping around the hills directly above Guidonia Montecelio, this 18,000-hectare regional park is one of central Italy's least-crowded natural escapes. Ancient shepherd tracks, wolf sightings and medieval hermitages make every walk feel like genuine discovery.
Forests, Fauna and Flora
The park shelters wolves, porcupines, roe deer and a rich bird-of-prey population including peregrine falcons and short-toed eagles. Its mixed woodland of turkey oak, hornbeam and ancient chestnut is among the most biodiverse in Lazio.
Wildflower meadows peak in May and June with dozens of native orchid species, some found nowhere else in the region. The park authority publishes a free botanical map available at the visitor centre in Percile.
Key Trails and Stops
The Sentiero dei Briganti connects several hilltop villages and passes the ruined watchtower of Torre di Marano, a favourite picnic spot with views over the Aniene valley. Total length is around 14 km and can be split across two days using agriturismo accommodation along the route.
The Santuario della Madonna della Neve near Rocca Giovine sits inside the park boundary and is reachable on foot from Guidonia in about three hours via a marked path — a rewarding mix of pilgrimage and nature walk.
