Monte Gennaro Summit
At 1,271 metres, Monte Gennaro is the highest peak of the Monti Lucretili and the natural crown above Guidonia Montecelio. On a clear morning the view sweeps from the Apennines to the glittering Tyrrhenian Sea and the entire Roman Campagna below.
The Climb
The most popular trail starts from Prato Favale and winds through holm-oak and beech forest before breaking into open limestone meadows near the top. The ascent takes roughly two hours at a steady pace and is well-marked with CAI trail signs throughout.
Spring brings wild orchids and rock-rose along the path, while autumn coats the beech groves in copper and gold. Even in summer the summit breeze keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the city below.
What You See from the Top
On exceptional days you can pick out the dome of St Peter's Basilica sitting on the horizon some 35 kilometres to the west, framed by the rolling Campagna. To the east the Gran Sasso massif rises dramatically above the Abruzzo border.
A simple stone orientation table near the summit cross names the peaks and towns visible in every direction, turning the panorama into a geography lesson you will actually enjoy.
