Playa de San Lorenzo
A sweeping 1.5-kilometre arc of golden sand right in the heart of the city, San Lorenzo is one of Spain's finest urban beaches — backed by a handsome promenade and framed by the old Cimadevilla headland on one end.
The Beach Itself
The sand is fine, the Atlantic surf is real, and the water quality consistently earns a Blue Flag rating — rare for a beach so close to a city centre of 270,000 people.
Lifeguards patrol in summer, showers and sun-lounger rentals line the paseo, and the waves are lively enough to attract surfers from September onwards when the crowds thin out.
The Promenade Scene
The Paseo del Muro de San Lorenzo runs the full length of the beach and is the social spine of the city — joggers, cyclists, families with churros and retirees with newspapers all share it without friction.
At the western end, the headland of Cimadevilla rises sharply, giving you an instant change of scenery from open Atlantic to narrow medieval lanes within a five-minute walk.
Practical Tips
July and August are busy but never unbearable; June and September offer warm sand, calmer seas and far fewer towels.
The beach faces north, so afternoon light is best for photography and the sunsets behind Cimadevilla turn the wet sand a deep amber.
