Parque Natural de Cabo Peñas

Just 25 kilometres west of Gijón, Cabo Peñas is the northernmost point of Asturias — a dramatic headland of vertical limestone cliffs dropping 100 metres into churning green Atlantic water, crowned by a working lighthouse and almost entirely free of tourist infrastructure.

The Landscape

The cliffs here are among the highest on the Cantabrian coast, and the sound alone is worth the trip: Atlantic swells detonate against the base with a deep, physical boom that you feel in your chest. The spray reaches the clifftop path on stormy days.

The surrounding protected natural area is covered in Atlantic heath — heather, gorse and coastal grassland — and the combination of open sky, violent sea and utter quiet makes it feel far more remote than it actually is.

Wildlife and Walking

Cabo Peñas is an excellent cetacean-watching point: bottlenose dolphins are regularly spotted from the cliff edge, and common dolphins, harbour porpoises and even fin whales pass the cape on their Atlantic migrations between March and October.

A well-marked 4-kilometre circular trail loops around the headland from the lighthouse car park, passing cliff edges, a small cove and the ruins of an old radar installation; the walk takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace and requires no specialist equipment.

The Lighthouse

The Faro de Cabo Peñas, built in 1852 and still operational, sits at the tip of the headland and houses a small free interpretation centre about the cape's geology and maritime history — open on weekend mornings in summer.

The lighthouse keeper's cottages have been converted into a rural guesthouse (Casa del Faro de Cabo Peñas), making it possible to sleep right on the headland and watch the light sweep across the sea at night — one of the more unusual overnight experiences in northern Spain.
