Parque Regional del Curso Medio del Río Manzanares (Getafe Stretch)
Most visitors know the Manzanares through Madrid's Río Madrid park, but the river's protected middle course passes through Getafe's northern boundary and offers something the city stretch cannot: genuine riparian woodland, herons, kingfishers and almost nobody else. Lace up your shoes and follow the green corridor south.
The Riparian Forest Trail
A well-signed dirt path follows the eastern bank through a gallery forest of white poplars, willows and tamarisks that turns a luminous gold in October and November — one of the most underappreciated autumn-colour walks in the whole Community of Madrid.
The river here is shallow and braided, and in summer the gravel bars attract little ringed plovers nesting in plain sight. Bring binoculars; the birding is genuinely rewarding without requiring any specialist effort.
Getting the Most from the Walk
The most rewarding access point from Getafe is via the northern end of the Parque de La Alhóndiga, from where a footpath descends to the riverbank in under fifteen minutes.
Early morning in spring and late afternoon in autumn are the sweet spots: the light is golden, the temperature is comfortable and the raptors — black kites, red kites, booted eagles — are active overhead.
