Parque Natural del Soto del Henares (Getafe stretch)
The Jarama and Manzanares rivers frame Getafe's eastern boundary, and the riparian woodland that lines their banks — part of the broader Soto del Henares natural corridor — delivers a genuine nature fix without leaving the metropolitan area. Herons, kingfishers, and even otters have been recorded here.
Walking and cycling the green corridor
A well-maintained path follows the river bank for several kilometres, connecting to the wider Anillo Verde Ciclista de Madrid — the green cycling ring that circles the capital. Rent a BiciMAD electric bike in Madrid and you can pedal all the way out here through continuous greenery.
The best stretch for birdwatching is the oxbow lake area near the confluence of the Manzanares and Jarama, where reed beds attract warblers in spring and migrating ducks in autumn. Bring binoculars; the light is best in the two hours after sunrise.
Seasonal highlights
Spring transforms the corridor with wild flowers — yellow broom, white rockrose, and stands of Lombardy poplar coming into leaf. Temperatures are mild and the paths are rarely crowded on weekday mornings.
In summer, locals use the shaded river banks as a free alternative to paid pools; the water itself is not designated for swimming, but the dappled shade under the poplars is legitimately refreshing when Madrid bakes at 38 °C.
