What to buy and taste
Head straight to the charcutería stalls for Iberian pork cuts at prices that will make you wince at what you paid on Gran Vía. The cheeses from La Mancha — manchego in its various curing stages, plus lesser-known torta del casar — are sold by vendors who will let you taste before you commit.
The fish counter is surprisingly extensive for an inland city, reflecting the speed of the Mercamadrid wholesale market nearby. Arrive before 11:00 on Saturday for the widest selection before the best cuts disappear.
