Pic de Charance – Conservatoire Botanique
A short drive or a brisk 45-minute hike above Gap's western edge brings you to the Pic de Charance, where a restored 18th-century château sits inside a remarkable botanical garden and the views stretch from the Dévoluy peaks to the Écrins massif. This is the definitive vantage point over the city and its encircling mountains.
The hike and the garden
The Conservatoire Botanique National Alpin manages the hillside estate, and the trails through it double as a living encyclopedia of alpine flora — over 2,000 plant species labelled and growing in their natural habitat across terraced slopes.
The path from the Gap city centre car park at the Chemin de Charance takes roughly 45 minutes on foot; the gradient is moderate and the trail is well-signed, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
The view from the top
From the château terrace at roughly 1,050 metres, the entire Durance valley fans out below you, with the rooftops of Gap's old town directly beneath and the snow-capped summits of the Écrins national park filling the southern horizon on clear days.
Sunrise and late afternoon are the most photogenic moments — the low light turns the limestone peaks copper and throws long shadows across the valley floor.
