Belvédère de la Pepinière & Parc de la Pépinière
Tucked above the cathedral quarter, the Parc de la Pépinière is Gap's beloved hilltop green space — and the belvedere at its upper edge delivers a sweeping 180-degree panorama over the city's terracotta rooftops to the snow-capped ridges of the Écrins massif. It costs nothing, crowds are thin and the views are genuinely jaw-dropping.
The View & the Park
On clear days — and Gap boasts over 300 sunny days a year — you can identify the peaks of the Parc National des Écrins rising to more than 4,000 m on the northern horizon. The contrast between the warm, southern-feeling city below and the glaciated summits beyond is uniquely striking and unlike anything you'll find in coastal Provence.
The park itself is terraced with rose gardens, shaded allées of plane trees and a small children's play area. It is a favourite spot for locals doing their evening passeggiata, and the atmosphere is relaxed and authentically un-touristy.
Getting There & Best Timing
From the cathedral, follow Rue du Maréchal Foch uphill for about 400 m; the park entrance is signed. The walk takes roughly 10 minutes from the town centre and involves a gentle but sustained climb.
Sunset is the prime time to visit: the peaks of the Écrins turn rose-pink and the city lights begin to flicker on below. Bring a light layer even in summer — the elevation of Gap at 735 m means evenings cool quickly.
