Marché de Gap — Place Jean Marcellin & Surrounds
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the heart of Gap transforms into a sprawling open-air market where mountain farmers, cheese affineurs and honey producers set up stalls stretching from Place Jean Marcellin through the adjoining streets. It is one of the largest and liveliest weekly markets in the Hautes-Alpes department.
What to Buy & Eat
The Saturday market is the bigger of the two and draws producers from the surrounding valleys — expect wheels of Banon goat's cheese wrapped in chestnut leaves, jars of lavender honey from the Buëch valley, locally cured sausages spiced with mountain herbs, and trays of seasonal Alpine fruit.
Prepared-food stalls offer socca, freshly roasted chickens, and paella to eat on the spot. Grab a paper cone of olives marinated in herbes de Provence and join locals perching on the fountain edge for an impromptu breakfast.
Navigating the Market
Arrive before 9:00 to beat the crowds and secure the best produce; by 12:30 most vendors are packing up. The covered halles at the edge of the square house the permanent butchers and fishmongers who trade on non-market days too.
The market spills up the pedestrian Rue Carnot, where you'll find fabric merchants, second-hand book sellers and artisan soap makers alongside the food stalls — budget at least 90 minutes to do it justice.
