Marché de Gap – Place Jean Marcellin

Every Saturday morning, Gap's main square erupts into one of the liveliest markets in the southern Alps, where farmers from the Champsaur valley unload wheels of tomme, bundles of lavender and crates of mountain strawberries. It is the single best place to understand what daily life tastes like in this corner of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

What to buy

Hunt down the local Bleu du Queyras, a raw-milk blue cheese produced in tiny quantities in the high valleys above Gap — you will rarely find it outside this region.

Stalls spill across the square selling walnut oil pressed in the Drôme, dried mushrooms foraged from the Dévoluy massif, and jars of génépi liqueur made from alpine wormwood. Arrive before 9 a.m. to beat the crowds and get the best pick.

The atmosphere

The market wraps around the 15th-century Cathédrale Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Arnoux, whose honey-coloured stone glows warmly behind the striped parasols of the vendors.

After shopping, slide into one of the café terraces on the square and order a café crème — the people-watching alone is worth the trip.
