Best Trails and Access
The park's most accessible entry point from Frosinone is via the SP Sublacense road toward Filettino and Trevi nel Lazio, two small hill towns that serve as hiking bases. From Filettino, the trail to Monte Viglio (2156 m) — the park's highest peak — is a strenuous but non-technical 5-hour return hike through dwarf pine and alpine meadow, with views on clear days stretching to the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo.
For a gentler half-day walk, the Valle della Forma trail from Trevi nel Lazio follows a clear mountain stream through old-growth beech forest, passing a small waterfall at the 4 km mark. The path is well-marked with CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) trail blazes.
Wildlife and Seasons
Late May and June are ideal: the meadows above 1500 m are in full flower, streams run high with snowmelt, and the chances of spotting roe deer at dawn are excellent. October brings the beech-forest colour change — the slopes above Filettino turn a theatrical amber and russet that photographers travel specifically to capture.
Winter snowfall makes the higher trails impassable without crampons, but the lower valley routes remain open and are hauntingly beautiful under snow.
