Parco Naturale dei Monti Aurunci – Day Hike from Frosinone
Less than 50 kilometres south of Frosinone, the Monti Aurunci regional park delivers dramatic limestone ridges, wildflower meadows and near-total solitude even in high summer. It is the easiest genuine wilderness escape from the city, reachable by car in under an hour.
The Gorge Trail from Lenola
The trail from the hilltop village of Lenola into the Valle delle Ferriere gorge is the park's most rewarding half-day walk: a 7-kilometre loop that drops through holm-oak forest into a narrow canyon where spring water runs cold even in August.
In May and June the slopes are carpeted with Iris lutescens and wild orchids; birdwatchers should look for peregrine falcons riding thermals above the limestone scarps in the morning hours.
Practical Hiking Tips
The trailhead at Lenola's Piazza Roma has a small information board with the main marked routes; the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) trail markings are reliable but a paper map from the park office in Fondi is worth picking up.
Water sources are limited on the upper ridges — carry at least 1.5 litres per person and start early to avoid afternoon heat from June through September.
