Mont Boron & the Nietzsche Path Overlook, Nice
Rising between Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer, the pine-forested hill of Mont Boron offers the rare treat of seeing two bays simultaneously — the wide sweep of the Baie des Anges to the west and the intimate, yacht-studded Rade de Villefranche to the east. Best of all, almost no tourists make the effort to reach it.
The View from the Fort
At the summit sits Fort du Mont Alban, a perfectly preserved 16th-century coastal fort built by the Duke of Savoy. Its square watchtowers and dry moat are atmospheric even without entering, but it is the platform outside the walls that stops you in your tracks: on a clear morning you can see all the way to the Italian coast beyond Menton, and the snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps float above the city skyline.
The surrounding Parc Forestier du Mont Boron is a protected forest of Aleppo pine and holm oak criss-crossed by walking trails. It feels remarkably wild for a park that is a 15-minute bus ride from Nice city centre.
Getting There
Bus 14 from Nice city centre drops you near the park entrance; from there a signed trail climbs gently to the fort in about 20 minutes. Alternatively, rent a bike on the Promenade des Anglais and follow the coast road east — the climb is stiff but the descent back into Nice is exhilarating.
Sunset is the magic hour here. The light turns the limestone fort walls gold, the Baie des Anges shimmers pink, and the first lights of Nice begin to flicker on below. Bring a picnic and a jacket — the hilltop breeze can be brisk even in summer.
