Èze Village
Perched 427 metres above the Mediterranean on a needle of rock between Nice and Monaco, Èze is one of the most dramatically sited villages in Europe. Its honey-stone lanes, bougainvillea-draped archways and panoramic ramparts reward every steep step of the climb.
The Village Itself
Èze's car-free centre is a labyrinth of 14th-century vaulted passages, artisan studios selling Fragonard perfume and hand-thrown ceramics, and tiny squares where cats doze in the afternoon sun. The ruined 12th-century château at the summit has been converted into a cactus garden — the Jardin Exotique d'Èze — whose succulent terraces frame postcard views of Cap Ferrat and the Ligurian coast.
Friedrich Nietzsche famously walked the steep mule path from the coast below (now called the Chemin de Nietzsche) while composing 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra', and the trail remains one of the finest coastal hikes on the Riviera, dropping through pine and olive groves to Èze-sur-Mer station.
When to Visit & Practicalities
Arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm in summer to beat the tour-bus crowds and experience the village in something approaching tranquillity. The golden light of late afternoon turns the stone walls amber and makes photography effortless.
Bus 112 from Nice runs regularly and drops you at the village gate, making a car unnecessary. If you want to splurge, the Château de la Chèvre d'Or hotel terrace bar serves a glass of Provence rosé with arguably the finest sea view on the entire coast.
