Gorges de la Diosaz, Servoz
Just 10 kilometres west of Chamonix in the quiet village of Servoz, the Gorges de la Diosaz is one of the most spectacular and least-visited natural attractions in the Mont Blanc valley. A series of wooden walkways and iron bridges, some dating to 1871, cling to the sheer walls of a limestone gorge carved by a torrential glacial river.
Walking the Gorge
The signed path leads for roughly 1.2 kilometres into the gorge, rising about 200 metres on a series of wooden gangways bolted directly into the rock face. Seven waterfalls punctuate the route, the most dramatic being the 30-metre Cascade du Soufflet, which roars through a narrow slot and fills the air with cold spray — bring a light waterproof jacket even on sunny days.
The gorge narrows to just a few metres wide at its tightest point, forcing the river into a churning green torrent below your feet. The contrast between the dark, dripping rock walls above and the white water below makes for extraordinary photography, especially in morning light when shafts of sun reach the canyon floor.
History & Context
The Gorges de la Diosaz have been open to visitors since 1871, making them one of the oldest managed natural attractions in the French Alps. The original iron infrastructure — handrails, bracket supports and bridge anchors — is still visible alongside modern safety additions, giving the walk an atmospheric Victorian-adventure feel.
Servoz itself is a genuinely unspoiled Savoyard village with a 13th-century church, traditional chalets and a handful of farms still producing Tomme de Savoie. It makes a refreshing contrast to the bustle of Chamonix, 10 km up the valley.
Getting There & Combining with a Day Out
Servoz has its own stop on the Mont Blanc Express narrow-gauge railway that runs between Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix. Trains run roughly every hour and the journey from Chamonix takes about 15 minutes — making this an easy half-day excursion without a car.
The gorge entrance is a 10-minute walk from Servoz station. Combine it with lunch at one of the village's two small auberges and a walk up to the ruined Château de la Frasse for views back toward the Mont Blanc massif before catching the evening train back to Chamonix.
