Aiguille du Midi Cable Car, Chamonix
At 3,842 metres, the Aiguille du Midi telepherique catapults you from Chamonix town centre to a jagged granite needle in under 20 minutes. The panorama — Mont Blanc's snowfields, the Vallée Blanche glacier, and peaks stretching into Italy and Switzerland — is simply one of the most dramatic views on Earth.
The Ride & the Summit
The two-stage cable car departs from central Chamonix and rises more than 2,800 vertical metres, making it one of the highest vertical ascents of any cable car in the world. Dress in serious layers: even in July the summit platform hovers around -10 °C with biting wind.
At the top, a glass-floored 'Step into the Void' cubicle lets you stand suspended above a sheer 1,000-metre drop — terrifying and unforgettable in equal measure. The central pillar also houses a small café and a glacier-science exhibit worth browsing while you acclimatise.
Extending the Adventure
From the Aiguille du Midi you can board the Panoramic Mont Blanc gondola — a slow, silent crossing above crevassed glaciers — all the way to Pointe Helbronner on the Italian border, where the Skyway Monte Bianco continues down to Courmayeur.
Serious off-piste skiers and ski-tourers use the summit as the launch point for the legendary 20-kilometre Vallée Blanche descent, best attempted with a certified UIAGM mountain guide booked through the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix.
Practical Timing
Queues at peak summer season can exceed two hours. Book a timed ticket online at least 48 hours in advance through the Mont Blanc Naturel Resort website and arrive 15 minutes before your slot.
Morning departures (first cabin leaves around 08:00) offer the clearest skies before afternoon clouds build around the summit — a pattern that holds from June through September.
