Villa Aurélienne & its Sequoia Park

Hidden behind iron gates on the Boulevard de la Mer, the Villa Aurélienne is a 19th-century Italianate mansion set within a 9-hectare park planted with some of the most extraordinary trees in Provence — giant sequoias, Lebanese cedars and centuries-old plane trees that dwarf every human who walks beneath them. Entry is free and almost nobody outside Fréjus knows it exists.

The Park: A Botanical Surprise

The estate was created in the 1880s by a Parisian industrialist who planted specimen trees from around the world with the ambition of creating a private botanical garden. The giant sequoias — now over 30 metres tall — create a cathedral-like atmosphere utterly unlike anything else on the Côte d'Azur, their cinnamon-red bark glowing warmly in the afternoon sun.

A signed botanical trail loops through the park identifying over 50 tree species, and the lawns beneath the canopy are open for picnicking. In spring the wisteria draped across the villa's façade blooms in cascades of purple that stop visitors in their tracks.

The Villa and Its Cultural Programme

The villa itself hosts temporary art exhibitions, outdoor cinema screenings and classical music concerts throughout summer — the programme is managed by the Ville de Fréjus and listed on frejus.fr. The combination of world-class trees, a handsome Belle Époque building and free admission makes this one of the most rewarding 90-minute detours on the entire Riviera.

The park borders the Plage de la Gabelle beach path, so you can combine a morning stroll through the sequoias with an afternoon on the sand without moving your car. Cyclists will find it easily on the coastal cycle route between Fréjus-Plage and Saint-Raphaël.
