Fréjus Wednesday & Saturday Market
Twice a week the Place de la Liberté and surrounding streets in the old town explode into one of the Var's liveliest outdoor markets. Lavender honey, tapenade, fat Bandol olives, socca batter and sun-blushed tomatoes pile up on stalls run by the same farming families who've been coming here for generations.
What to Buy and Where to Taste
Arrive before 9 am to beat the crowds and catch the best produce. The cheese stalls on the northern edge of the square carry aged Banon wrapped in chestnut leaves, creamy Brousse du Rove and hard Tomme de Provence — ask for a taste before you buy, vendors expect it and enjoy the conversation.
The charcuterie vendors stock sanglier (wild boar) saucisson from the Maures hills and dried figs stuffed with fennel seed — both make ideal picnic supplies for a beach afternoon at Fréjus-Plage.
Beyond the Food Stalls
The Saturday market is larger and spills into the Place Agricola, adding antiques, Provençal fabric (the vivid indiennes prints), pottery and second-hand books. It's genuinely a local market, not a tourist performance — you'll hear as much Provençal-accented French as English.
Finish with a café crème at the terrace of Le Forum brasserie on Place Paul Vernet, right on the market's edge, and watch stallholders pack up around 13:00 sharp. The rhythm of the market is as much the attraction as the shopping.
