Rocca di Ravaldino
Most visitors to Forlì walk past the Rocca di Ravaldino without realising that this solid, moated Renaissance fortress was the stage for one of the most audacious acts of defiance in Italian history: in 1488 Caterina Sforza, regent of Forlì, held this fortress against a besieging army and reportedly made an obscene gesture from the battlements that has been retold — with varying degrees of embelli
The History Inside the Walls
Built in the 1280s and substantially expanded by the Ordelaffi lords in the 14th century, the rocca was Forlì's military anchor for over 200 years. Its four corner towers and deep moat (now dry but clearly legible) give it a compact, muscular beauty distinct from the more decorative Este castles of Ferrara.
Caterina Sforza used the rocca as her personal stronghold during the turbulent years of her regency, and it was here that she held out against Cesare Borgia's forces in 1499–1500 before finally being captured — an episode that made her a Renaissance legend across Europe.
Visiting Today
The rocca is now used partly as a prison facility, which limits interior access, but the exterior, the moat walk and the adjacent public gardens are freely accessible and reward a slow circuit on foot.
Guided tours of the interior are occasionally organised by the Forlì city council and the local heritage association Italia Nostra — check the municipal tourism website (turismoforli.it) for dates, as these sell out quickly among history enthusiasts.
The Surrounding Neighbourhood
The streets immediately around the rocca — particularly Via delle Torri and Corso Diaz — retain a quiet, slightly faded residential character that feels untouched by tourism, with small bars, a neighbourhood bakery and elderly residents who will cheerfully tell you everything they know about Caterina Sforza if you show the slightest interest.
The rocca is best photographed in the golden hour before sunset when the brick glows a deep terracotta and the swallows that nest in the tower joints perform their evening aerobatics.
