Parco Urbano Franco Agosto

Stretching along the banks of the Montone river on Forlì's eastern edge, the Parco Urbano Franco Agosto is a 60-hectare ribbon of willows, meadows and cycling paths that most tourists completely overlook. On a weekday morning it belongs almost entirely to joggers, herons and the occasional fisherman, making it the city's most peaceful escape.

Walking and Cycling the Riverbank

A flat, well-maintained cycle path follows the Montone for several kilometres in both directions from the park's main entrance on Via Ravegnana, connecting seamlessly with Forlì's wider network of urban bike lanes — the city has one of the highest cycling modal shares in Italy.

In spring the riverbanks are lined with wild poppies and the willows trail their fingers in the current; in autumn the same stretch turns amber and gold in a way that feels entirely disproportionate to how close you are to a city centre.

Wildlife and Quiet Corners

The Montone corridor is a recognised bird-watching site: grey herons nest in the tall poplars, kingfishers dart between the reed beds, and in autumn migrating black storks have been recorded passing through — remarkable for a park within walking distance of a railway station.

Several wooden picnic tables are positioned under mature plane trees near the river bend at the park's northern end — bring a piadina from the market and you have the makings of a perfect Romagnol lunch.

Getting There and Combining with the City

The park is a 20-minute walk east from Piazza Saffi along Corso Garibaldi, or a 7-minute bike ride — free city bikes (Forlì in Bici scheme) can be picked up from docking stations near the station.

Combine a morning in the park with an afternoon at Musei San Domenico for a day that balances nature and culture without ever needing a car.
