Rocher des Demoiselles Panorama
A short, steep scramble through the forest brings you to this sandstone outcrop perched above the town, where a single unobstructed viewpoint rewards you with a sweeping panorama over the château rooftops, the town's slate spires and the green carpet of the forest rolling toward the horizon. It is the best free view in Fontainebleau and almost nobody from the château queue makes the detour.
The climb and the view
From the town centre, follow Rue de France south and pick up the orange-marked forest trail at the edge of the urban area — the Rocher des Demoiselles is signposted from there. The ascent through pine and sandstone takes about 20 minutes from the château.
At the top, a flat sandstone platform gives you a 180-degree view north over Fontainebleau: the château's distinctive chimneys and the blue-grey rooftops of the town in the foreground, with the flat agricultural plain of the Île-de-France stretching beyond. At sunset the light is extraordinary.
Combining with a forest loop
The viewpoint sits at the start of several longer forest circuits. The most satisfying option is to continue south along the ridge to the Gorges du Hêtre, a quieter ravine of beech trees and mossy boulders, before looping back to town via the Route Ronde — a total circuit of about 5 km.
The rocks themselves are a popular low-level bouldering spot for beginners and are well-worn smooth by generations of climbers. On weekend mornings you will often find groups of young Parisians here for their first taste of Bleau bouldering before graduating to the harder sectors deeper in the forest.
