Rocher des Demoiselles
Perched on a sandstone ridge 20 minutes' walk from the edge of town, the Rocher des Demoiselles is Fontainebleau's finest viewpoint and one of the least visited — a wide, flat-topped boulder platform that delivers a 180-degree panorama over the forest canopy and the palace roofline shimmering in the distance. Sunrise and golden hour here are genuinely breathtaking.
Getting to the Top
The most direct approach follows the red-and-white GR1 long-distance trail from the Fontainebleau town centre, heading south through the Plaine de Bière. The path climbs gently through Scots pine and birch before the sandstone outcrops announce you're close — the final scramble up bare rock to the summit platform takes about five minutes and requires no special equipment.
A slightly longer but more scenic loop (about 5 km total) incorporates the nearby Rocher Cassepot ridge, which adds more boulder scrambling and a second, slightly lower viewpoint looking north toward the palace.
What You See
From the top platform you look out over an almost unbroken sea of forest — a reminder that this is one of the largest continuous woodlands in northern France. On clear days the palace's distinctive horseshoe-shaped façade is visible above the treeline to the north, and the Loing valley glints to the south.
At sunset the sandstone beneath your feet turns from cream to deep amber, the sky behind the palace goes pink and orange, and you will understand immediately why the Barbizon School painters spent decades trying to capture this exact quality of light.
