Marché de Fontainebleau (Place de la République)
Every Tuesday and Friday morning, Place de la République transforms into one of the most authentic provincial markets in the greater Paris region — a proper working market where locals shop, not a tourist showcase. Cheese caves, charcuterie slabs and crates of seasonal Île-de-France produce fill the square from 7am.
What to buy and who to talk to
The fromagerie stall run by an affineur from Nemours brings wheels of Brie de Meaux (the real, unpasteurised AOC version) alongside aged Comté and a creamy local goat's cheese that rarely makes it to Paris shops. Arrive before 9am for the best selection.
The charcutier near the fountain sells rillettes, boudin noir with apples and thick slabs of jambon de Paris that make an excellent picnic base. Pair them with a sourdough loaf from the boulangerie stall and you have lunch sorted for the forest.
Seasonal vegetables from local maraîchers (market gardeners) reflect exactly what is growing in the Seine-et-Marne: asparagus in April, white peaches in July, pumpkins and ceps in October.
Atmosphere and practical tips
The market wraps up by 1pm, but the café terraces around the square stay busy well into the afternoon. Café de la Paix on the corner is the classic post-shopping stop for a grand crème and a tartine.
Friday's market is slightly larger than Tuesday's and draws a few more stalls from further afield, including a Moroccan spice seller and an oyster stand that shucks to order on the spot.
