Village de Via and its Romanesque Church

A five-minute drive from Font-Romeu's ski lifts, the tiny hamlet of Via (population under 100) harbours one of the finest pre-Romanesque churches in the Cerdagne — Sant Andreu de Via — whose interior shelters faded 12th-century frescoes that most visitors to the ski resort never know exist.

The church and its art

Sant Andreu de Via dates from the 11th century and retains its original barrel-vaulted nave and Lombard bell tower. Inside, fragments of Romanesque fresco survive on the apse — including a Christ in Majesty (Pantocrator) surrounded by the Evangelists' symbols — painted in the warm ochres and terracottas typical of the Catalan Romanesque school that also produced the masterpieces now in the MNAC in Barcelona.

The church is often unlocked during daylight hours; if not, the key is held by a resident whose address is posted on the door. Allow your eyes five minutes to adjust to the dim interior before the frescoes reveal themselves.

The village and surroundings

Via itself is a cluster of granite farmhouses and vegetable gardens that feels completely removed from the ski-resort bustle 3 km uphill. A short lane leads past the church to an old stone bridge over the Riu de la Llosa, where trout rise in summer evenings and the silence is total except for cowbells.

Combine a visit with a walk along the GR10 long-distance path that passes through the village heading east toward Angoustrine — even 30 minutes in either direction gives a feel for the ancient transhumance routes that connected these valley communities for centuries.
