Restaurant Le Chalet (Font-Romeu)
Tucked into the lower village near the ski slopes, Le Chalet is the kind of unpretentious, wood-panelled mountain restaurant that Font-Romeu does best: open fire in winter, terrace with Pyrenean views in summer, and a menu that takes Catalan and Languedoc mountain cooking seriously. It is the place locals send visitors when they ask where to eat properly.
What to Order
Start with the escudella, a Catalan meat-and-vegetable broth thickened with pasta or rice that has warmed mountain workers here for centuries — the version at Le Chalet uses local pork, chicken and botifarra sausage and arrives in a deep earthenware bowl. Follow it with trinxat de la Cerdanya, the region's signature dish of mashed potato and cabbage fried with lardons until crispy and golden.
For meat eaters, the grilled côte de bœuf de race Aubrac is carved tableside and served with hand-cut fries and a jug of alioli. The wine list leans on Roussillon appellations — ask for a Côtes du Roussillon Villages red to pair with the meat.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room seats around 40 and fills quickly on winter weekends when ski season is in full swing. Reservations are strongly advised from December to April and in July and August. The staff are matter-of-fact and efficient rather than formal, which suits the mountain setting perfectly.
Budget around €28–38 for a two-course meal with a glass of wine. The lunch formule (starter + main or main + dessert) at around €18 is exceptional value and popular with locals on market days.
