Marché de Font-Romeu (Sunday Market)
Every Sunday morning the main square of Font-Romeu fills with stalls selling Cerdagne honey, Catalan charcuterie, hand-rolled goat's cheese and mountain herbs — a lively, fragrant slice of cross-border Pyrenean life that locals have been running for decades.
What to buy
Look for mel de la Cerdanya — the local buckwheat and wildflower honey that carries a distinct mountain bitterness — sold by beekeepers who set up hives on the high pastures above 1,800 m. Alongside it you'll find embotits catalans: thick-cut fuet, llonganissa and bull negre brought up from the Conflent valley below.
Several stalls specialise in Catalan fromages de brebis (sheep's milk cheese), including a young, crumbly version eaten with quince paste. Arrive before 10 h for the best selection; by noon the cheesemakers are usually sold out.
The atmosphere
The market spills across the Place de Barcelone and down the adjacent pedestrian lane, mixing year-round residents with weekending skiers in winter and hikers in summer. A crêpe van and a vin chaud stall (mulled wine in winter) keep energy levels up.
It's a genuinely local affair rather than a tourist showcase: you'll hear Catalan, French and Spanish spoken in the same sentence, and prices are honest. Bring a canvas bag and cash — not all vendors take cards.
