Odeillo Solar Furnace (Four Solaire d'Odeillo)
The giant parabolic mirror of Odeillo is one of the most jaw-dropping pieces of engineering in Europe, focusing sunlight to reach temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. Standing beneath its 63 curved reflectors on the hillside above Font-Romeu is a genuinely surreal experience that blends science fiction with Pyrenean mountain scenery.
What Makes It Extraordinary
Built in 1970 and still operated by the CNRS (France's national scientific research centre), the furnace concentrates solar energy to reach 3,500 °C — hot enough to melt steel and test aerospace materials. The 54-metre-high parabolic dish is assembled from 9,500 individual mirrors, each precisely angled to bounce light toward a single focal point the size of a cooking pot.
The facility sits at 1,800 metres altitude in the Cerdagne plateau, a sun-drenched microclimate that enjoys over 300 sunny days per year — which is precisely why scientists chose this spot. The contrast of gleaming silver panels against snowy Pyrenean peaks is a photographer's dream.
Visiting in Practice
Guided tours run from late June to early September and include an indoor exhibition explaining solar energy research, plus access to the outdoor terrace directly facing the mirror. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and is suitable for children from around age 8 upward.
The furnace is located in the hamlet of Odeillo, a 10-minute drive or a pleasant 4-km downhill walk from Font-Romeu centre. Parking is free and plentiful on site. Arrive early in summer as tour slots sell out by midday.
