Restaurant Le Catalan, Font-Romeu

Tucked into the lower end of the town, Le Catalan serves the kind of robust, no-nonsense Catalan mountain food that makes sense after a day on the ski slopes or a long ridge walk — think slow-braised escudella, grilled botifarra sausage and crema catalana torched to order.

What to order

Start with a pa amb tomàquet — thick sourdough rubbed with ripe tomato and drizzled with Catalan olive oil — then move to the plat de muntanya: a generous board of grilled meats including botifarra negra (blood sausage), xistorra and lamb chops from the Cerdagne plateau, served with white beans and alioli.

In winter the kitchen makes a proper escudella i carn d'olla: a two-course Catalan stew where the broth with pasta comes first, followed by the meats and vegetables. It's listed as a daily special on Thursdays and Fridays from November through March.

Wine and setting

The short wine list leans heavily on Roussillon appellations — ask for a glass of Maury Sec (Grenache noir from just over the hill) to pair with the charcuterie, or a white Côtes du Roussillon for the cheese course.

The dining room has low timber ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace and walls hung with vintage ski posters — exactly the mountain-refuge aesthetic you want after a cold day outside. Reservations are essential on winter weekends.
