Lac des Bouillouses & Carlit Massif
A 20-minute drive above Font-Romeu, the Lac des Bouillouses sits at 2,017 m surrounded by a constellation of smaller tarns, granite boulders and dwarf pine — one of the most accessible high-alpine landscapes in the Pyrenees, and the gateway to the summit of Pic Carlit (2,921 m).
The lake circuit
A well-marked 12 km loop trail circles the Bouillouses reservoir and dips past eight smaller glacial lakes including the jewel-green Estany de la Pradella and the mirror-still Étang Long. The path is mostly flat and doable by fit families; the full loop takes three to four hours at a relaxed pace.
In July and August the meadows around the lake are carpeted with cotton grass, marsh marigolds and the rare Pyrenean butterwort. Bird watchers come for the wallcreeper on the granite cliffs and the occasional golden eagle riding thermals above the Carlit ridge.
Climbing Pic Carlit
From the Bouillouses car park a signed GR10 variant climbs steadily through boulder fields to the summit of Pic Carlit in about three hours return — the highest peak in the Eastern Pyrenees and a relatively non-technical ascent in summer. The 360° panorama takes in the Cerdagne, the Capcir plateau and, on clear days, the Mediterranean glinting 100 km to the east.
Start before 8 h to avoid afternoon thunderstorms (common July–August) and to have the summit to yourself. A light fleece and waterproof are essential even in midsummer; temperature drops sharply above 2,500 m.
