Rivière Souterraine de Labouiche
Just 6 km north-west of Foix, Labouiche is home to the longest navigable underground river in Europe — a 1,500-metre boat journey through cathedral-sized caverns draped in stalactites, all carved by a river that has been flowing through the limestone for millions of years.
The journey underground
Flat-bottomed boats carry groups of up to 12 people along the subterranean river for about 75 minutes, guided by boatmen who punt and pull on iron rails fixed to the cave walls. The cave temperature holds at a constant 13°C year-round — a welcome relief in July, a reason to bring a layer in any season.
The highlight is a vast chamber called the Grand Lac, where the cavern opens to nearly 20 metres in height and the reflections of the stalactites in the still black water create a perfect mirror image. It is genuinely, quietly spectacular.
Practical details
The site is family-run and has been welcoming visitors since 1908, which gives it a pleasingly old-fashioned, non-theme-park character. The access path through the forest above the river entrance is itself a lovely 10-minute walk.
Photography is allowed and the cave lighting, though theatrical, produces surprisingly vivid results. A wide-angle lens or a phone with a good night mode will serve you well in the larger chambers.
