Marché de Foix – Place Parmentier & Halles

Every Friday morning the covered Halles and the surrounding Place Parmentier fill with the colours and aromas of one of the Ariège's liveliest weekly markets. Local farmers, cheese-makers and charcutiers from the Pyrenean valleys turn this into a genuine taste of regional life.

What to look for

The Ariège is serious cheese country — look for fermier tommes made from raw cow's or ewe's milk, and the nutty, semi-hard Bethmale, produced in the valley of the same name just 40 km to the west. Alongside the cheeses you'll find violet-tinged Ariège garlic, wild mushrooms in season and fragrant mountain honey.

Charcuterie stalls pile high with saucisson sec, magret de canard séché and pâtés made from the black pigs raised in the Couserans hills. Vendors are proud of their provenance and happy to let you taste before you buy.

Beyond the food

Textile and clothing stalls, flower sellers and a handful of antique and brocante dealers fill the outer edges of the market, making it worth a full lap even if your appetite is already satisfied.

The café terraces on Place Parmentier are perfectly positioned for a post-shopping café crème and a slice of watching Foix locals catch up on the week's gossip — a ritual that seems entirely unchanged from decade to decade.
