Trattoria da Pompeo

Tucked into the centro storico on Via dei Archi, Da Pompeo is the kind of family trattoria that Foggiani themselves pack out on Sunday afternoons — a sure sign that the cooking is rooted in genuine local tradition rather than tourist expectation. The handwritten daily menu follows what arrived at the market that morning.

What to Order

Start with the antipasto della casa: a rotating parade of small plates that almost always includes marinated lampascioni (wild hyacinth bulbs, bitter and addictive), bruschetta rubbed with local olive oil, and some form of fried peperoni cruschi that shatter like savoury crisps on contact.

For a primo, the lagane e ceci — wide, rough-cut pasta ribbons with chickpeas, rosemary and a thread of chilli oil — is a Capitanata staple done here with the right amount of rough-edged honesty. The ragù di agnello (lamb ragù) over handmade orecchiette is the secondo that locals order without looking at the menu.

Atmosphere & Booking

The dining room is small, noisy and decorated with the cheerful clutter of a place that has never felt the need to rebrand. Paper tablecloths, carafes of local Nero di Troia wine poured without ceremony and a dessert trolley of almond pastries complete the picture.

Reservations are strongly advised for Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch. Walk-ins are welcomed at quieter weekday lunchtimes. Cash is preferred, though cards are accepted.
