Mercato Ortofrutticolo di Foggia (Piazza Mercato)

Foggia sits at the centre of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, Italy's second-largest agricultural plain, and its daily produce market is the beating, boisterous proof. Arrive before 9 am and you'll find the most fertile flatlands in the south piled into crates, baskets and wheelbarrows right in front of you.

What to Expect

The stalls spill across Piazza Mercato and the surrounding streets every weekday morning, stacked with enormous cardoncelli mushrooms from the Gargano foothills, blood-red Pachino-style tomatoes, fat white fennel bulbs and braids of local dried peppers called 'peperoni cruschi' — a Basilicata-border speciality that has fully colonised Foggia cooking.

Vendors shout prices in a thick Foggiano dialect, haggling is normal and expected, and the social theatre is as entertaining as any formal attraction. Go hungry: street-food sellers on the perimeter fry fresh panzerotti and hand-rolled taralli still warm from the oven.

Shopping Tips

Bring a fabric bag and small coins. Most stallholders prefer cash and appreciate customers who don't photograph produce without asking first — a simple 'posso fare una foto?' goes a long way.

The best single purchase is a bag of dried peperoni cruschi: they weigh almost nothing, last for months and will transport you straight back to Foggia the moment you fry them in olive oil at home.
