Trattoria da Pompeo

Tucked into a side street near the centro storico, Da Pompeo has been serving the honest, unfussy cooking of the Capitanata since the 1960s — the kind of place where the menu changes with the market, the bread is baked that morning, and the house wine arrives in an unlabelled carafe without anyone asking. It is the most reliable address in the city for a true Foggian lunch.

What the Tavoliere Tastes Like

The kitchen leans hard on the agricultural wealth of the surrounding plain. Expect handmade lagane pasta with chickpeas, braised lamb with wild fennel and olives, and in autumn, pasta tossed with cardoncelli mushrooms and local pecorino. These are not dishes invented for tourists — they are what Foggian families have eaten for generations.

The antipasto spread is reason enough to visit: roasted peperoni cruschi glistening with olive oil, pickled vegetables, bruschetta rubbed with lard and topped with the season's best tomato. Order the full spread and you may not need a main course — though you will want one anyway.

The Atmosphere and How to Order

The dining room is small, loud, and decorated in the cheerfully dated style of a family trattoria that has never felt the need to rebrand. Reservations are advisable for Friday and Saturday lunch, when local business owners fill every table by 13:15 and the noise level becomes genuinely festive.

Ask the server what arrived at the market that morning — the off-menu daily specials are usually the best things in the kitchen. Finish with a glass of Primitivo di Manduria or the local Nero di Troia, both of which pair beautifully with the earthy, olive-oil-rich food.
