Monfragüe National Park
Monfragüe is the best place in Europe to watch large birds of prey, full stop. The Peña Falcón Viewpoint & Castle
The park's centrepiece is the Peña Falcón cliff, a sheer red quartzite wall rising above the Tajo reservoir where griffon vultures nest in the hundreds. Pull over at the roadside mirador on the EX-208 and within minutes you'll have birds soaring at eye level, close enough to see individual feathers. The nearby Castillo de Monfragüe, a Moorish fortress perched on the ridge, adds a dramatic human layer to the landscape.
The short but steep trail up to the castle (about 20 minutes from the car park) passes a remarkable Neolithic rock painting of a deer in red ochre — one of the oldest artworks in Extremadura. From the battlements, the view over the reservoir and the dehesa stretching to the Sierra de Gredos is extraordinary.
Wildlife, Seasons & Practicalities
Spring (March to May) is peak season: black storks arrive from Africa in March, imperial eagles are nesting, and the dehesa erupts in wildflowers. Autumn is excellent for seeing large vulture gatherings. Summer is hot and some species disperse, but black vultures are resident year-round.
The park has a well-run visitor centre at Villarreal de San Carlos with maps, telescopes and knowledgeable staff who can tell you where specific species were seen that morning. The village also has a small café and a campsite. Guided birding tours operate from Plasencia, 20 km north.
