Mérida Roman Theatre & Amphitheatre
Mérida preserves the most complete Roman monument complex in Spain, and standing in its 2,000-year-old theatre with the carved marble stage wall still intact is genuinely jaw-dropping. The city was once Augusta Emerita, capital of Roman Lusitania, and the scale of what survives will reframe everything you thought you knew about ancient Iberia.
The Theatre & Amphitheatre
The Teatro Romano seats 6,000 and its two-storey scaena frons — a wall of Corinthian columns, niches and statues — is so well preserved it looks almost staged. Every summer from late June to early August the International Classical Theatre Festival fills it with live performances of Greek and Roman drama, making it the most atmospheric open-air stage in Europe.
The adjacent Amphitheatre once held 15,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests; walk the sand floor of the arena and you can peer down into the underground corridors where animals and fighters waited. Both monuments are part of the same ticket, so budget at least two hours to do them justice.
The Wider Archaeological Site
The same combined ticket also covers the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano next door, a soaring brick basilica designed by Rafael Moneo that houses the finest collection of Roman sculpture, mosaics and frescoes outside Italy. Don't skip the basement, where excavated Roman streets lie directly beneath the museum floor.
Elsewhere in town, the Temple of Diana stands in the middle of a public square, the Circus Maximus foundations stretch for 400 metres along Avenida Juan Carlos I, and the Puente Romano — a 792-metre bridge over the Guadiana — is still used by pedestrians every day. Mérida rewards wandering.
