Cáceres Old City (Ciudad Monumental)

Cáceres' walled old city is one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance towns in the world — a UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth of honey-stone palaces, Moorish towers and cobbled squares where Game of Thrones filmed its King's Landing street scenes. At dusk, when the tour groups thin out and the storks clatter on the rooftops, it feels genuinely otherworldly.

Palaces, Towers & the Plaza Mayor

Enter through the Arco de la Estrella and you step into a skyline that has barely changed since the 15th century. The Torre de las Cigüeñas (Tower of the Storks), the Casa de las Veletas — now the Museo de Cáceres, with a remarkable Moorish cistern in its basement — and the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo crowd around each other in a dense, walkable quarter that covers barely half a square kilometre.

The Plaza Mayor just outside the walls is the social heart of the city: lined with café terraces and framed by the old city's battlements, it's the perfect place for a late-afternoon beer before the evening paseo begins. On summer nights the square hosts open-air concerts and film screenings.

Food & Staying Inside the Walls

A handful of restaurants and tapas bars operate inside the monumental city, and the quality is high. Atrio, a two-Michelin-star restaurant in a sleek contemporary hotel carved into a 15th-century palace on Plaza de San Mateo, is one of the most celebrated dining addresses in Spain — the wine cellar alone, with over 40,000 bottles, is worth a visit.

For a more casual meal, the streets around Plaza de San Juan just outside the walls are packed with pintxos bars and traditional Extremaduran taverns serving torta del Casar cheese, ibérico pork and migas. Budget travellers will find a full tapa with a drink for €2–3 in most neighbourhood bars.
