Les Jardins d'Étretat
Perched on the clifftop above Falaise d'Aval, Les Jardins d'Étretat is one of Normandy's most surprising experiences — a contemporary eco-art garden where topiary, land art and sweeping sea views collide in a way that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else. Russian designer Alexander Grivko reimagined the historic Villa Orphée gardens in 2017 and the result is quietly extraordinary.
What to expect inside
The garden is divided into themed outdoor rooms, each playing with perspective, reflection and the natural drama of the cliff edge behind them. Sculptural yew hedges are trimmed into fluid, wave-like forms that echo the chalk arches below, while mosaic pathways and mirrored water features add flashes of colour against the grey-green Atlantic backdrop.
A dedicated Instagram trail winds through the most photogenic spots — the garden leans into this shamelessly, and the results are genuinely spectacular rather than gimmicky. The best single shot in Normandy might be the one looking back from the cliff-edge terrace with the arch framed between two sculpted hedges.
Practical tips
Allow 1.5–2 hours to walk the full circuit without rushing. The garden café serves light lunches and Norman cider; the terrace tables overlooking the sea are worth booking in advance during summer weekends.
Tickets must be booked online in advance during July and August when timed entry slots sell out by mid-morning. Visiting in May or September means smaller crowds and the garden is often at its most lush.
