Les Jardins d'Étretat
Perched on the clifftop above Falaise d'Aval, Les Jardins d'Étretat is one of the most unusual gardens in France — a contemporary, conceptual landscape where sculpted yew hedges, living chess pieces and sea-facing terraces sit right on the edge of the chalk cliffs. The views alone are worth the ticket price.
A garden with an artistic vision
Created by Russian landscape designer Alexandre Grivko and opened in 2017, the garden wraps around a Belle Époque villa once owned by actress Madame Thébault and later by composer Offenbach's family. The design blends Norman flora with surrealist art installations that change seasonally.
Sculpted hedges are trimmed into abstract organic forms, and a series of terraced rooms each frames the sea arch below from a different angle — essentially turning the garden into a series of living picture frames.
What to see inside
The centrepiece is the clifftop belvedere terrace, which gives a direct overhead view of the Falaise d'Aval arch and the Aiguille Creuse needle — a perspective you simply cannot get from the beach or the standard cliff path.
The garden also houses a café-restaurant in the villa serving seasonal Norman produce. Book a table on the terrace for lunch and the arch is your backdrop for the entire meal.
Planning your visit
The garden covers roughly 1 hectare and a leisurely visit takes 1–1.5 hours. It gets busy in July and August — online pre-booking is strongly recommended to guarantee entry.
Spring (May–June) is the prettiest season when the coastal wildflowers are in bloom and the hedges have just been trimmed into crisp shapes.
