Erice Weekly Market & Local Producers
Every Saturday morning a modest but authentic street market unfolds along the lanes near Porta Trapani, where local farmers from the Trapanese hinterland bring seasonal produce, wild herbs, fresh ricotta and the extraordinary Sicilian capers that grow on the very walls of the old town. It is the kind of market that reminds you food is a landscape.
What the Vendors Bring Up the Mountain
Look for bunches of wild fennel, dried oregano still on the branch, braids of garlic and the small, intensely flavoured Pachino-style tomatoes grown on the slopes below. The ricotta here — made from sheep's milk by farms in the Belice valley — is sold in woven baskets and is nothing like the supermarket version.
Caper sellers are a highlight: the fat, salt-packed capers harvested from Erice's own medieval walls and from the nearby island of Pantelleria are sold loose by weight, their brine-sharp perfume filling the street. Buy a jar and your pasta will taste different for months.
Beyond the Saturday Market: Year-Round Artisan Shops
Erice's permanent craft shops along Via Cordici and Via Chiaramonte stock handwoven rugs and ceramics in the town's distinctive geometric patterns — a tradition maintained by a handful of local weavers using upright looms unchanged since medieval times. The Laboratorio del Tappeto Ericino is the most authentic workshop and welcomes visitors.
For wine and pantry staples, Cantine Pellegrino has a tasting room near Trapani (easily combined with a day trip) where you can pick up bottles of Marsala and Zibibbo that the local market vendors recommend.
