Erice Castle (Castello di Venere)
Perched on the very summit of Monte San Giuliano at 751 metres, the 12th-century Norman Castle of Venus crowns a sacred rock where a temple to the goddess Venus once drew sailors from across the Mediterranean. Walking through its crenellated walls feels like stepping into a myth.
A Fortress Built on Ancient Worship
The Normans built Castello di Venere directly over the ruins of the ancient Sanctuary of Venus Erycina, one of the most venerated shrines in the classical world. Fragments of the original Greek-Punic temenos wall are still visible beneath the medieval stonework, making every step a layered encounter with history.
Inside the ruined keep you can wander roofless chambers open to the sky, where wild capers sprout from the limestone joints and swallows wheel overhead. The contrast of rough golden stone against the deep blue Sicilian sky makes it one of the most photogenic spots on the island.
Views That Stretch to Africa on a Clear Day
From the castle's eastern parapet the entire Egadi Islands archipelago fans out below — Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo floating like green chips in a turquoise sea. On exceptionally clear winter mornings, the distant outline of Cap Bon in Tunisia is visible some 170 km away.
The surrounding Giardino del Bàlio, a romantic walled garden of roses and citrus trees, provides a gentler counterpoint to the battlements. Arrive at golden hour and the warm light on the stone walls turns the whole scene amber.
