Port-Musée de Douarnenez
One of France's most unusual maritime museums keeps its collection alive and afloat: you can actually board restored fishing vessels, tugboats and a lightship moored in the Port du Rosmeur. It is the largest floating boat museum in Europe, and it earns that title with more than a hundred craft spread across the water and the covered exhibition halls on the quayside.
What to See Aboard
The star of the fleet is the Saint-Denys, a 1930s steam tug you can explore deck by deck, engine room included. Alongside it sits the Nébuleuse, a 19th-century lightship whose red hull is one of the most photographed sights in the whole port.
Don't rush past the smaller sardine boats, the sinagots and the bisquines — these low, nimble craft defined Breton fishing culture for generations, and the museum's restorations are meticulous enough to make you feel the salt air of a century ago.
The Onshore Halls
Inside the quayside buildings, scale models, navigational instruments and vivid oral-history recordings flesh out the story of Douarnenez as Brittany's sardine capital — at its 1880s peak, the town canned more sardines than anywhere else in France.
A dedicated children's workshop runs most weekends and school holidays, letting kids try rope-splicing and flag-signalling, which makes this one of the most family-friendly stops in Finistère.
Practical Tips
The museum is open daily from April to October, with reduced winter hours; budget at least two hours for a proper visit. The outdoor pontoons are free to wander on certain open-heritage days, but the full ticket — around €8 for adults — is worth every cent.
Combine your visit with a stroll along the adjacent Quai du Grand Port, where working fishing boats still unload their catch each morning, giving the museum's exhibits an immediate, living context.
