La Crêperie du Port, Douarnenez

Tucked along the Quai du Grand Port, La Crêperie du Port is the kind of place Douarnenez locals take visiting relatives to prove that Breton food is more than a cliché. The galettes here are made with stone-ground buckwheat flour from a Finistère mill, cooked to a lacework crisp on the edges and served with produce sourced from within the département.

What to Order

The galette complète — ham, emmental and a free-range egg — is the benchmark by which every other Breton crêperie should be judged, and here it arrives with the yolk still trembling. For something more adventurous, the galette homard-bisque pairs local lobster with a rich crustacean cream that tastes like the bay distilled into a sauce.

Finish with a sweet crêpe filled with salted caramel made in-house: the kitchen uses fleur de sel from Guérande and Breton butter, and the result is richer and less cloying than the tourist-trap versions sold in Quimper souvenir shops.

The Setting

The dining room has large windows overlooking the working port, and if you time your lunch well you can watch the morning's catch being unloaded directly onto the quay — a reminder that the fish in your galette may have been in the sea a few hours ago.

In warm weather, the small terrace is one of the best places in town to linger over a bowl of cidre brut from the Fouesnant region, watching the boats and the gulls compete for scraps.

Booking and Timing

The crêperie fills quickly on summer lunchtimes and on Thursday and Sunday market mornings; a reservation the evening before is strongly advised from June to August. In the shoulder season it is usually possible to walk in, and the quieter atmosphere makes it even more pleasant.

Lunch is the main service; some evenings are also open in high season but hours vary — call ahead or check the chalkboard outside.
