Terrasse du Parc Bertin
Perched on the highest ground within walking distance of the city centre, the raised terrace of Parc Bertin offers a surprisingly expansive 180-degree view over Douai's rooftops, church spires and the silver ribbon of the Scarpe. It is the city's best free vantage point and almost nobody outside of locals knows it.
The park itself
Parc Bertin is a classic 19th-century French municipal garden with clipped lawns, ornamental beds and old plane trees whose canopy turns gold in October. The upper terrace is reached by a short flight of stone steps and is lined with iron benches that face north toward the belfry — ideal for a long, lazy look at the cityscape.
On clear days you can pick out the towers of the Collégiale Saint-Pierre and the distinctive silhouette of the Hôtel de Ville. Bring a wide-angle lens if you are a photographer; the foreground of flower beds and the mid-distance rooftops make for a classic postcard composition.
When to visit
Sunrise visits in summer reward early risers with soft pink light raking across the Flemish rooftops and virtually no other visitors present. Late afternoon in autumn is equally magical when the plane trees are fully golden and the low sun turns the belfry's stone to warm amber.
The park is also a favourite lunchtime escape for office workers, so a midday visit on a weekday has a lovely, lived-in energy. Grab a sandwich from the Boulangerie Frédéric Vion on Rue de Paris and eat it on the terrace with the city at your feet.
