Marché de la Place du Barlet
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Place du Barlet and the quays along the River Scarpe fill with stalls selling local endives, Maroilles cheese, fresh-caught fish and artisan breads — a sensory plunge into everyday Nord-Pas-de-Calais life. Locals have been shopping here for generations, and the atmosphere is as authentic as it gets.
What to buy and taste
Look for Maroilles AOP — the pungent, washed-rind cheese made in the nearby Avesnois — sold in thick squares by fromagiers who will let you taste before you buy.
The charcuterie stalls pile high with andouillette de Cambrai, potjevleesch (a cold layered meat terrine in jelly) and blood sausages that are staples of northern French cooking.
Local market gardeners from the Scarpe valley bring seasonal produce: leeks, chicory, and in autumn, enormous pumpkins and apples from orchard farms just outside town.
The riverside setting
The market spills along the Quai de la Scarpe, where old stone warehouses once stored grain barges; the combination of market bustle and calm river reflections makes for irresistible photography.
Grab a warm gaufre de Lille (a thick, soft waffle dusted with pearl sugar) from one of the mobile stalls and eat it on the quayside — this is the local way to start a market morning.
Practical tips
Arrive before 9h00 for the best choice and to watch the stallholders arrange their displays; by 12h30 most vendors are packing up.
The nearby Rue de Bellain has several boulangeries where you can pick up a ficelle nordiste (a thin, crisp local baguette) to complete your picnic haul.
